Several months ago I wrote an article discussing the benefits of using Internet Yellow Pages to improve your local presence.

I’ve been thinking about local SEO a little more lately and have noticed time and time again that a lot of my clients are targeting a specific geographic location but their website is designed to appeal to a national audience. When I ask them if they serve a national audience they usually say that they only focus locally.

Which brings me to an important thing to keep in mind if you are a small business in the same situation- make sure your site clearly defines your market!

It is so much easier to improve your search results when you are more specific about your target market. If you are a small business selling widgets only in Denver, then your website had better make that clear. Otherwise, your site will get buried under the countless number of other businesses selling widgets nationwide. If you’re not selling widgets in San Jose, then why bother competing with companies selling widgets in San Jose?

When thinking about SEO and your marketing strategy in general, know your target market and go after that market. Keep it simple, keep it specific.

I came across a great article on SEOMOZ.org that provides easy, simple, yet effective advice on how to get started with a local SEO strategy.
